NYC Migrant Accused of Rape Released at Border Despite Criminal History: ICE

A Nicaraguan migrant accused of raping a woman at knifepoint in Coney Island was caught and released at the U.S. border, despite having a lengthy rap sheet and an immigration detainer placed on him.

Daniel Davon-Bonilla, 24, first crossed into the U.S. illegally in December 2022 and was encountered by Border Patrol in Eagle Pass, Texas. He was subsequently turned over to ICE, but was released and ordered to report to the ERO Miami Field Office at a later date.

Despite the detainer, Davon-Bonilla remained in the U.S., racking up several run-ins with law enforcement, including an arrest for alleged sex crimes in April 2023.

NYC is a sanctuary city, which means local law enforcement generally doesn't cooperate with ICE detainers. This allows individuals like Davon-Bonilla to remain in the city and continue committing crimes.

Davon-Bonilla was convicted of assault in June 2024, but was released once again. He was then arrested in August for allegedly raping a 46-year-old woman at knifepoint in Coney Island, alongside an accomplice.

Following the alleged crime, NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell expressed his outrage about the city's sanctuary city status. He argued that migrants like Davon-Bonilla come to the U.S. not for a better life, but to prey on city dwellers.

"When will our sanctuary city laws be amended to allow us to notify federal authorities regarding the deportation of noncitizens convicted of violent crimes?" Chell asked. "Failing to act enables individuals like Daniel Davon-Bonilla to continue victimizing women in our city."
