Cuomo Faces Backlash

Cuomo, despite being considered the frontrunner, faced intense criticism from rivals. The debate brought up past controversies, including sexual harassment allegations and his handling of nursing home deaths during the pandemic. Brad Lander, the city comptroller, even urged Cuomo to apologize to a man whose father died in a nursing home during the COVID-19 crisis. Mamdani also targeted Cuomo's ties to corporate donors, highlighting a $1 million contribution from DoorDash.

The debate descended into personal attacks, with candidates sparring over their backgrounds and records. Mamdani corrected Cuomo's mispronunciation of his name, while Cuomo questioned Lander's “New Yorker” credentials due to his St. Louis upbringing.
