NYC Manhunt Intensifies: Police Close In on UnitedHealth CEO's Killer
New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that authorities are tightening the net around the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealth executive Brian Thompson. The 50-year-old CEO was shot in the back in a targeted attack on Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred just before UnitedHealth's annual investor conference. The suspect, described as wearing a hooded jacket, balaclava, and gray backpack, fled the scene on an electric bike after the shooting.
Key Developments:
- A backpack resembling the one worn by the suspect was recovered in Central Park. While a jacket and Monopoly money were found, police are still searching for the murder weapon in a nearby pond.
- Extensive evidence, including fingerprints, DNA, and video footage, has been collected. Police believe the suspect may have left New York City after being seen entering a bus station.
- A combined $60,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the suspect's arrest.
Mayor Adams emphasized the importance of not revealing the suspect's name publicly to avoid hindering the investigation. However, security camera footage showing the suspect's face has already been released to the public.
"We revealed his face," the Mayor stated, "We’re going to reveal who he is and we’re going to bring him to justice."
The investigation is ongoing, and police are actively pursuing all leads. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that police have gathered a “huge amount of evidence,” including fingerprints, DNA evidence and camera footage of the suspect’s movements.
Police Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny added that the suspect was seen entering a bus terminal, and they believe he may have left the city.
The circumstances suggest a premeditated attack, with video showing the gunman waiting for Thompson before shooting him in the back. Thompson, a married father of two, died at the hospital shortly after the attack.
