NYC Mayor Eric Adams Under Federal Investigation: Subpoenas Issued for Campaign Finances
New York City Mayor Eric Adams, City Hall, and his 2021 campaign have received subpoenas from a federal grand jury as part of an ongoing investigation into past fundraising practices. The investigation, conducted by the Southern District of New York and the FBI, is looking into whether any campaign finance or corruption-related laws were broken.
The investigation centers around potential improper use of foreign money from Turkey in campaign finance actions and whether fire inspections were prioritized in exchange for donations. The full scope of the investigation is unclear, and no criminal charges have been filed.
Mayor Adams has consistently denied any wrongdoing and stated he will cooperate with the investigation.
This isn't the first time subpoenas have been issued in the case. Previous subpoenas focused on campaign donors, fundraisers, and Mayor Adams himself, resulting in the seizure of several devices including his cellphone and iPad.
Mayor Adams' Counsel Responds
Brendan McGuire, counsel to the mayor and campaign, released a statement saying they have conducted their own investigation, reviewing campaign documents, analyzing electronic communications, and interviewing witnesses. They claim to have not found any evidence of illegal conduct by the Mayor and have voluntarily shared their findings with the US Attorney.
The investigation remains ongoing.
