NYC Mayor Eric Adams Indicted on Federal Charges: Will He Stay in Office?

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is facing a federal indictment just weeks after authorities raided the homes of his top aides. The indictment remains sealed, but sources say it is likely to be unsealed Thursday, when Adams may appear in court.

Adams, a former police captain who won the mayoral election nearly three years ago, has denied the charges and vowed to fight them. He said in a statement that the charges are "entirely false" and that he will "request an immediate trial so that New Yorkers can hear the truth."

The indictment follows a year of federal scrutiny over the mayor's administration, including a separate probe on possible illegal foreign donations from Turkish officials during Adams' 2021 mayoral campaign.

In response to the indictment, many New York leaders have called for Adams' resignation. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., said she "does not see how Mayor Adams can continue governing New York City." State Senator Zellnor Myrie said it was a "sad day" for the city and called for Adams to step down.

However, Adams has vowed to stay in office and has maintained his innocence.

Political Upheaval and Resignations

The indictment comes amid a series of resignations from top city officials, many of whom were also subject to federal corruption investigations. In November 2023, the FBI seized Adams' phones and computer and raided the home of his campaign treasurer. Since then, officials have been resigning at a rapid pace, including Police Commissioner Edward Caban, Deputy Mayor for Criminal Justice Philip Banks III, and First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright.

The indictment of Mayor Adams has raised serious questions about the future of his administration and the city's government. Whether he will resign or stay in office to fight the charges remains to be seen.
