NYC Mayor Eric Adams Indicted: First in City History to Face Criminal Charges While in Office

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, 64, is facing federal criminal charges, becoming the first mayor in the city's history to be indicted while in office. The indictment, which remains sealed, is the culmination of multiple federal corruption probes targeting Adams and his administration.

Adams, elected in 2021 on a promise to reduce crime in the city, released a video statement on Wednesday, vowing to fight the charges and remain in office. He insists on his innocence and has requested an immediate trial, urging New Yorkers for "prayers and patience." He also addressed calls for his resignation, stating that he can manage the city while fighting the accusations.

The indictment comes after a year of scrutiny, including the seizure of Adams' electronic devices and the search of his chief fundraiser's home. Federal prosecutors are investigating allegations that Adams' 2021 mayoral campaign team conspired with the Turkish government to funnel illegal donations into the campaign. The investigation also includes inquiries into potential campaign finance violations related to five other countries: Israel, China, Qatar, South Korea, and Uzbekistan.

Adams' indictment comes amidst a series of high-profile resignations and departures from his administration. These include the recent resignation of Schools Chancellor David Banks, whose departure came just days after federal agents seized the electronic devices of three individuals closely affiliated with the mayor: Banks, his brother Deputy Mayor Phil Banks, and his fiancée Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright.

The US attorney's office in Manhattan is also investigating Terence Banks, another brother of David Banks, over a potential bribery scheme involving his consulting firm and city contracts. Bribery allegations are also being investigated against the twin brother of former New York Police Commissioner Edward Caban, who resigned earlier this month after his phone was seized.

The mayor's chief legal counsel and the city health commissioner have also stepped down in recent weeks, further raising concerns about the administration's ability to function effectively.

What's Next?

The indictment is expected to be unsealed on Thursday, when Adams will make an initial court appearance. While he insists on staying in office, calls for his resignation are growing, including from prominent figures like US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul, a close ally of Adams, has the power to remove him from office, but she has yet to comment on the indictment. If Adams' tenure ends prematurely, New York's Public Advocate Jumaane Williams would become the city's acting mayor.

The indictment marks a significant turning point in Adams' administration and raises questions about his future as Mayor of New York City.
