NYC Mayor Eric Adams Faces Bribery Charges: Will He Be Ousted?

NYC Mayor Eric Adams Pleads Not Guilty to Bribery Charges

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has pleaded not guilty to five federal charges, including bribery, wire fraud, and soliciting illegal foreign campaign donations. The indictment alleges that Adams accepted illegal campaign funds and luxury travel benefits from Turkish businessmen in exchange for political favors during his time as Brooklyn Borough President and his mayoral campaign.

Adams maintains his innocence, claiming that he "follows the rules" and has committed no wrongdoing. His lawyer, Alex Spiro, has stated that he will file a motion to dismiss the case next week, arguing that the prosecution relies solely on a witness who has lied.

Calls for Resignation

Despite Adams's plea, calls for his resignation have grown within his own party. Some Democrats at the state and federal level have urged him to step down, while others have called for an investigation.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has the power to remove Adams from office, but has said she needs time to review the indictment before making a decision. The Mayor could also be ousted by a "inability committee" comprised of city officials who oppose him.

Ongoing Investigations and Administration Turnover

The indictment comes as part of a broader federal investigation into Adams's administration, which has seen a wave of resignations in recent weeks. This includes the police commissioner, the health commissioner, the mayor's chief counsel, and the schools chancellor, David Banks, whose phone was seized by federal agents.

Adams's trial is set for October 2nd. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for the future of his administration and the city of New York.
