Lawmakers and advocates recently rallied in NYC, demanding stronger protections for migrants and adherence to the city's sanctuary laws. This comes as President-elect Trump prepares to take office, and Mayor Adams hints at potential collaboration with the new administration on deportations.

Concerns escalated after Adams met with the incoming "border czar," Thomas Homan, and made comments about removing undocumented immigrants who've committed violent crimes. Councilwoman Alexa Avilés strongly criticized this, stating, "We do not, should not, take part in Trump's extremist, xenophobic and racist agenda." She emphasized that city resources should prioritize New Yorkers and not support Trump's agenda.

The Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) Commissioner Manuel Castro testified before the City Council, highlighting efforts to train staff on NYC's sanctuary laws and ensuring city agencies avoid assisting immigration enforcement.

Two resolutions were discussed, aiming to bolster existing laws: one seeks to prevent state and local agencies from collaborating with ICE, and another pushes for guaranteed legal representation for immigrants in removal proceedings.

Adams maintains that he and Homan share the goal of removing violent criminals from the streets, but this assurance has not eased concerns.
