NYC Mayor Adams Under Fire: AOC Demands Resignation Amidst Multiple Investigations

AOC Calls for Mayor Adams' Resignation Amidst Federal Investigations

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has become the first nationally prominent Democrat to call for the resignation of New York City Mayor Eric Adams. This comes amidst a series of escalating federal criminal investigations into the mayor's administration and the sudden departure of several high-ranking officials.

Ocasio-Cortez, a fellow Democrat, expressed concern about the impact of the ongoing investigations on the city's ability to function effectively. She argued that the constant scrutiny and resignations make it difficult to recruit and retain qualified staff.

"I do not see how Mayor Adams can continue governing New York City,” Ocasio-Cortez stated on X (formerly Twitter). “The flood of resignations and vacancies are threatening government function. Nonstop investigations will make it impossible to recruit and retain a qualified administration. For the good of the city, he should resign.”

Adams, however, vehemently rejected the call for his resignation. He labeled it “hypocritical” and accused Ocasio-Cortez of engaging in “phony politics.”

“For anyone who self-righteously claims people charged with serious crimes should not be in jail to now say that the second Black mayor of New York should resign because of rumors and innuendo — without even a single charge being filed — is the height of hypocrisy,” Adams stated in a statement.

He affirmed his commitment to the city, stating, “I am leading this city to protect it from exactly that kind of phony politics. The people of this city elected me to fight for them, and I will stay and fight no matter what.”

Investigations and Resignations

While Adams has not been accused of wrongdoing, several members of his administration have come under scrutiny. Earlier this month, federal agents seized electronic devices from multiple top officials, including Mayor Adams himself.

The city’s former police commissioner, Edward Caban, resigned shortly after his devices and those of his brother were also seized by investigators. The head of New York City’s public schools system, David Banks, also announced his retirement by the end of the year, following the seizure of his devices.

Lisa Zornberg, the mayor’s top legal advisor, resigned, citing her inability to effectively serve in her position. The city’s health commissioner, Dr. Ashwin Vasan, also announced his resignation, although he claimed it was unrelated to the investigations.

Divided Response

While some of Adams’ long-time critics have joined Ocasio-Cortez in calling for his resignation, top Democrats in the state have remained largely silent or have voiced support for the mayor. The top Democrat in the House, U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, stated that he believes Adams is “working as hard as he can to be the best mayor possible.”

The pressure on Adams is mounting, however, with the investigations casting a shadow over his administration. The outcome of these investigations and the impact on the mayor’s future remain uncertain.
