NYC Mayor Adams Under Fire: A Web of Federal Investigations Unravels
New York City Mayor Eric Adams is facing a growing number of federal investigations, just under a year after FBI agents seized his phones. These inquiries are casting a shadow over his administration and raising serious questions about the conduct of his inner circle.
A Nightlife Company, a Top Cop's Twin, and a Juice Bar Owner
In September 2023, federal agents searched the homes of then-NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban and his twin brother, James Caban. James, a former police officer, runs a nightlife consulting business. A Brooklyn juice bar owner accused a mayoral aide, Ray Martin, of trying to extort him by claiming he would receive better police treatment if he hired James Caban as a consultant.
Following these searches, Caban resigned, citing the investigations as a distraction. Martin was also fired from his job at City Hall.
The Banks Brothers and a Consulting Firm
The Banks brothers, Philip and David, have been close to Adams for many years. Philip is the deputy mayor for public safety, while David serves as the schools chancellor. Federal investigators seized devices from both brothers, as well as from their youngest brother, Terence Banks, who runs a consulting firm that promises to connect businesses to government stakeholders.
Terence Banks' firm represented companies seeking work with city agencies, including the education and police departments. Some of these companies received millions of dollars in city contracts, including one that secured a personal meeting with the schools chancellor after hiring Terence Banks.
An Adviser with Control Over Contracts
Tim Pearson, a longtime Adams ally, is another figure under scrutiny. He is a trusted adviser who holds significant influence over city contracts, including those for migrant shelters. His electronic devices were seized by federal authorities earlier this month.
A Mayor Under the Microscope
The investigation into Mayor Adams himself is ongoing. FBI agents seized his phones and iPad in November 2022. The investigation appears to focus on a time period when Adams was Brooklyn borough president, but had won the Democratic primary and was widely expected to be elected mayor. During that period, Turkish officials were trying to get the city to expedite the approval of a new diplomatic building that were being held up because of safety concerns.
Other Inquiries
The FBI is also investigating Winnie Greco, the city’s director of Asian Affairs, and Frank Carone, the former chief of staff to Adams who now runs his own lobbying firm. In addition, two high-ranking fire chiefs were arrested on charges of soliciting bribes, and the homes of the city’s newly named interim police commissioner, Thomas Donlan, were searched.
These investigations continue to unfold, with new developments emerging regularly. It remains to be seen what impact they will have on Mayor Adams and his administration.
