NYC Mayor Adams' Top Aide Resigns Amidst Federal Investigations

New York City Mayor Eric Adams' chief counsel, Lisa Zornberg, resigned on Saturday night as the federal government continues multiple criminal probes into his administration.

This comes just two days after New York Police Commissioner Edward Caban stepped down, following a raid on his home and the seizure of his phone. Zornberg's resignation statement, shared by the mayor's office, simply stated she could no longer effectively serve in her position.

Adams thanked Zornberg for her work but offered no explanation for her departure. He stated that these are difficult jobs and that the administration would name a replacement in the coming days.

Zornberg's resignation follows a string of events where several top officials appointed by the mayor have been the subject of federal investigations. Last week, homes of Caban, First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Philip Banks III, and Chancellor of New York City Public Schools David C Banks were raided, and their phones seized.

Zornberg's role involved providing legal and strategic advice to the mayor, and she often responded to media inquiries about the federal investigations at weekly press conferences. In her resignation statement, she expressed gratitude to Mayor Adams for the opportunity to serve the city, and her continued support for his work.

The FBI raided the home of Adams' chief fundraiser, Brianna Suggs, and other members of his campaign last year. This investigation focused on whether Adams received illegal campaign contributions from the Turkish government and other foreign sources.

While the recent raids do not seem to be connected to the Turkey investigation, the increasing scrutiny from the federal government towards Adams and his administration has been a significant point of concern since he took office in 2022.
