This meeting comes as NYC grapples with a massive influx of asylum seekers, straining city resources and sparking intense political debate.
Adams, despite NYC's sanctuary city status, has expressed willingness to cooperate with federal authorities to deport criminal migrants. However, this stance clashes with Homan's stated intention to implement a mass deportation policy, mirroring the approach of the incoming Trump administration. Homan has also threatened to withhold funding from sanctuary cities that refuse to cooperate.
The city's migrant crisis has cost taxpayers billions and currently sees nearly 57,000 migrants in city care. In anticipation of the incoming administration's policies, the city has already announced the closure of a large migrant shelter at Floyd Bennett Field and plans to close 25 more shelters by March.
Protests are expected outside City Hall during the meeting, with immigrant rights groups urging President Biden to take protective measures for immigrant communities before the Trump administration takes office. The meeting will be followed by a press conference with Mayor Adams.
