NYC Mayor Adams Praises Kamala Harris' Focus on Law Enforcement Background

NYC Mayor Eric Adams: Kamala Harris Should Embrace Her Law Enforcement Past

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is encouraging Vice President Kamala Harris to embrace her law enforcement background, even in the face of progressive resistance to tough-on-crime messaging.

Adams, who himself rose to prominence as a former police officer, believes Harris's experience as a prosecutor is a valuable asset. He told Semafor, "The Democratic Party has a tendency to run away from public safety, but it is a very attractive criterion and is a very attractive part of your resume."

Harris, who served as district attorney and attorney general in California, prioritized a "smart on crime" approach. However, during her 2020 presidential campaign, she shifted her stance to appease progressives, even expressing support for the "defund the police" movement.

Adams believes Harris made a mistake by distancing herself from her law enforcement background. He stated, "She did run away. I don’t think she should have moved away from it. I think that now you see, she’s leaning into it."

This shift in strategy comes as Harris is increasingly using her law enforcement background to appeal to voters, particularly within the Democratic Party. Adams suggests that this change in direction could be beneficial for Harris's future political endeavors.

A Shared Background

Both Harris and Adams share a similar background as Black former law enforcement officers. Harris served as the district attorney for Alameda County and San Francisco before becoming California's attorney general and senator. Adams, a retired police officer with over two decades of service, transitioned into politics after his law enforcement career.
