NYC Mayor Adams Is About To Pick A New NYPD Commissioner Amidst Corruption Scandals
New York City Mayor Eric Adams is close to naming a permanent NYPD commissioner, but the decision comes amidst a burgeoning number of corruption investigations within his administration. Sources say Jessica Tisch, the current Department of Sanitation commissioner, and former First Deputy Police Commissioner Ben Tucker are on the short list.
This would be Adams' fourth NYPD commissioner in just under three years. His first commissioner, Keechant Sewell, resigned, and was replaced by Edward Caban, who also resigned. Tom Donlon currently serves as the interim commissioner.
The mayor's decision comes at a difficult time. At least 10 top city officials have either resigned, been forced out, or been fired in the past month. The feds have searched the homes of several key officials and confiscated documents.
Adams himself was indicted on Sept. 26 on charges of bribery, wire fraud and conspiracy to solicit a contribution from a foreign national.
This series of events has created a crisis of confidence in the Adams administration, and the selection of a new NYPD commissioner is being closely watched.
It is unclear when the mayor will make his decision, but it could come as early as next week.
