NYC Mayor Adams Faces Backlash: Another Lawsuit Rocks City Hall

NYPD

Former NYPD attorney Amy Litwin has filed a lawsuit against the NYPD and Mayor Eric Adams, alleging retaliatory dismissal after investigating misconduct by former Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey. Litwin's internal report concluded Maddrey abused his authority. This is the latest in a series of lawsuits against the mayor and the NYPD.

The Litwin Lawsuit: Retaliation Allegations

Litwin, the NYPD's deputy commissioner, claims her investigation into Maddrey's actions, specifically voiding a 2021 arrest, led to her firing by former NYPD commissioner Eddie Caban in 2023. Her lawyer, Sarena Townsend (herself a former internal affairs investigator fired in 2022), argues Litwin was punished for simply doing her job.

City Hall denies Mayor Adams' involvement, stating agency leaders have the right to dismiss employees. They also claim Townsend has a personal vendetta, a claim she refutes.

A Pattern of Lawsuits?

This lawsuit follows a recent one filed by four former high-ranking NYPD members, including former Chief of Detectives James Essig, alleging fraudulent promotions. Another suit claims former interim commissioner Thomas Donlon was removed for reporting corruption. Mayor Adams called these suits baseless, suggesting political motivations and "bad timing" given his upcoming reelection campaign. Retired NYPD detective and John Jay College professor Michael Alcazar notes the timing of these lawsuits, but dismisses the notion that the plaintiffs are working for the opposition.
