NYC Mayor Adams Faces Charges: Who Takes Over If He Resigns?

Who Takes Over If Mayor Adams Resigns?

With Mayor Eric Adams facing federal charges, speculation about his future and the line of succession in New York City has intensified.

According to the city charter, the Public Advocate, currently Jumaane Williams, would become the Acting Mayor if Mayor Adams is unable to serve.

If the Public Advocate is also unavailable, the Comptroller, currently Brad Lander, would assume the role.

The Public Advocate

Jumaane Williams has held the position of Public Advocate since 2019, winning a special election after previously serving as a city councilman. He ran for Governor of New York in 2022, but lost to Kathy Hochul.

The Comptroller

Brad Lander has served as the City Comptroller since 2021, previously holding a seat on the City Council for 12 years. He has announced his candidacy for Mayor in the 2025 election.

Mayor Adams' Response

Mayor Adams has denied any wrongdoing and has stated that he will request an immediate trial if charged, allowing “New Yorkers to hear the truth.”
