NYC Mayor Adams Declares War on Sex Trafficking: 90-Day Crackdown on Queens Brothels
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has launched a bold initiative to combat sex trafficking and illegal activity along Roosevelt Avenue in Queens. Dubbed "Operation Restore Roosevelt," this 90-day crackdown will involve a significant increase in police presence and a collaborative effort between the NYPD and New York State Troopers.
The crackdown targets a two-mile stretch of Roosevelt Avenue, known for its prevalence of illegal vendors and prostitution. Mayor Adams vowed to eliminate sex trafficking in the area, stating, "We are not here for one day and go away. We're here for the problem to go away."
Brothels Targeted in Raids
On Tuesday, authorities shut down a suspected brothel located on the third floor of a building at 95th Street and Roosevelt Avenue. This raid followed a similar operation just days prior where officers busted another massage parlor on the same street.
Relief for Residents
The increased enforcement has brought much-needed relief to residents like Gloria Contreras, who expressed concern for her 9-year-old daughter's safety due to the presence of alleged sex workers in the area.
However, authorities acknowledge the challenges in permanently eliminating these illegal establishments. Many of these alleged brothels have been known to reopen under different names shortly after being shut down.
Despite the challenges, Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry reassured residents that the NYPD is committed to a thorough crackdown: "We are working with the district attorney's office to stop that ... We are going to shut all you down before this 90 days are over. We are coming for you."
