SUV on Train Tracks Causes Chaos in NYC
<img src="[Insert image of SUV on tracks here if available from original article]" alt="SUV on LIRR Tracks">A 40-year-old Brooklyn man, Basilio Hidalgo, was arrested and charged with DUI, reckless endangerment, and criminal trespassing after driving his SUV onto the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) tracks on December 8th. The incident, which occurred around 4:52 p.m., resulted in a significant fire.
Hidalgo drove approximately half a mile on the tracks before his SUV's tires were damaged and caught fire. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Department (MTAPD) responded, and the Floral Park Fire Department extinguished the blaze. The vehicle was removed around 8:30 p.m.
The incident caused substantial damage to the third rail and track infrastructure, leading to significant delays on several LIRR lines. An Instagram video shows the SUV driving erratically on the tracks.
The damage caused significant delays on the Ronkonkoma, Port Jefferson, and Oyster Bay branches. Service was restored to the Hempstead Branch within ten minutes of the car's removal. Repairs were made, and the MTAPD continues its investigation.
"This kind of thing is very embarrassing… it can cause delay and it's very dangerous," commented one LIRR rider to ABC 7 New York.
The incident highlights the potential dangers of reckless driving and its impact on public transportation.
