NYC Man Arrested for Spying on Chinese Dissidents for Beijing

A New York man, Yuanjun Tang, 67, has been accused of acting as an illegal agent for the Chinese government between 2018 and 2023. The Justice Department alleges that Tang, who was granted political asylum and later became a U.S. citizen, worked at the direction of China's Ministry of State Security, the country's primary intelligence agency.

Tang is accused of providing information to Chinese intelligence officers about individuals and groups perceived as threats to China's interests, including prominent U.S.-based Chinese dissidents. He is also accused of helping the MSS infiltrate a group chat on an encrypted messaging application used by numerous Chinese dissidents.

Furthermore, Tang is accused of making false statements to the FBI about his ability to access an email account used to communicate with his MSS handler.

The Chinese Embassy has yet to respond to requests for comment, and Reuters has been unable to contact Tang.
