NYC Israelis Undeterred Despite DC Museum Shooting: A Story of Resilience
The recent shooting outside a Jewish museum in Washington, D.C., that killed two Israeli embassy employees, sent shockwaves across the nation. However, the response from Israelis in New York City reveals a complex mix of emotions – shock, resignation, and ultimately, a determination to continue life.
Many Israelis in NYC have firsthand experience with violence, having lived through similar events in Israel. Raif Rashed, owner of a Druze restaurant in Chelsea, narrowly escaped the Hamas attack at the Nova music festival in October 2023. He, like many others, expressed a blend of disbelief and resolve. His immediate reaction was to offer his restaurant as a safe haven for anyone feeling scared.
Erela Nornberg, a family and child therapist and founder of the Israeli Hug Center, noted the duality of feelings: fear and the need to carry on. She extended the center's hours, recognizing the potential for increased emotional distress among Israelis. Despite heightened security concerns and pro-Palestinian protests on Columbia University's campus, she highlights the importance of community resilience.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams addressed the shooting, calling it a "depraved act of terrorism" and connecting it to the concerning rhetoric of "Globalize the intifada." He held a press briefing alongside faith leaders and Jewish officials, underscoring the city's response to the tragedy.
Consul General Ofir Akunis, while acknowledging the need for increased vigilance, stated that the Israeli consulate's security remains robust and staff feel safe in NYC. He also noted a thwarted terror attack plot against the Israeli consulate in New York City in December 2024.
The events highlight the ongoing challenges of living in a world where such violence occurs. While fear is acknowledged, the unwavering spirit of the Israeli community in New York City shines through, demonstrating their resilience and determination to navigate this situation.
