NYC India Day Parade Sparks Controversy Over Ram Temple Float

As New Yorkers celebrate Indian Independence Day with the raising of the flag in Times Square, a controversy has emerged over a float in the upcoming India Day Parade. While the theme for the 42nd annual event is "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" (the world is one family), some interfaith and Muslim groups argue that the inclusion of a float representing a grand temple for Lord Ram, one of Hinduism's most revered deities, is not inclusive.

The temple, located in Ayodhya, India, holds deep significance for Hindus, who believe it marks Ram's birthplace. However, for others, the temple symbolizes the destruction of the 16th-century Babri mosque by Hindu nationalists in 1992, an event that sparked nationwide riots resulting in thousands of deaths.

The organization behind the Ram temple float, Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America (VHPA), has been labeled a far-right Hindu group, with some research suggesting its leaders promote anti-Muslim conspiracy theories.

Dr. Audrey Truschke, a South Asian history professor, views the float's inclusion as a step backward for the city's progress, arguing that the imagery has been used to incite violence against Muslims.

Mayor Eric Adams has addressed the controversy, stating that no one should be using anti-Muslim rhetoric in parades and emphasizing his commitment to an inclusive city.

Despite the controversy, the India Day Parade, organized by the Federation of Indian Associations, will take place on Sunday, August 18th, on Madison Avenue. The parade is the largest outside of India and will feature a food festival and cultural programs.
