The City Housing Activation Task Force will investigate potential housing development opportunities on city-owned land, aiming to build 500,000 new housing units over the next eight years.
The city owns over 5,000 parcels of land and buildings across the five boroughs, totaling over 362 million square feet of space. The task force will review these properties to identify suitable sites for housing development.
This initiative comes as the city faces a record-low apartment vacancy rate (1.4%) and skyrocketing rents, putting severe strain on renters.
The task force is chaired by Deputy Mayor for Housing, Economic Development and Workforce Maria Torres-Springer, and includes representatives from various city agencies like the Police and Fire Departments and the Department of Education. The initiative aims to leverage the “City of Yes” rezoning initiative, which could bring significant changes to NYC's zoning code.
However, the “City of Yes” plan has received pushback from residents who fear it will eliminate suburban-style neighborhoods.
The Legal Aid Society, while welcoming the task force, urges the city to ensure affordability for low-income residents and to take further action, such as increasing rental subsidies and preventing rent increases on stabilized units.
This initiative represents a significant step towards addressing the city's housing crisis, but its success will depend on its ability to balance the need for affordable housing with concerns about neighborhood change and the availability of sufficient city-owned land suitable for development.
