NYC Hotel Owners Fight Bill That Could 'Destroy' Their American Dream
The New York City Minority Hotel Association (NYCMHA), a group of South Asian immigrant hotel owners, is fiercely opposing a proposed bill they believe would devastate the city's hospitality industry. The bill, known as the Safe Hotels Act, aims to ban hotels from outsourcing jobs like housekeeping and front desk work to private companies.
The NYCMHA, representing over 120 non-union hotels primarily outside Manhattan, argues that the bill would drive up costs, force them to unionize, and ultimately harm their businesses.

The Safe Hotels Act, sponsored by Councilwoman Julie Menin, would also require hotels to apply and reapply for a license annually, creating uncertainty and making it difficult to secure loans.

The NYCMHA highlights that the bill would impact thousands of workers, many of whom are immigrant and minority families seeking stability in the city.
Menin, however, insists that the bill is necessary to improve safety and curb crime in and around hotels, citing statistics on murders and complaints to the NYPD.
The Hotel Trades Council (HTC), the union representing hotel workers, supports the bill, arguing that some hotel owners prioritize profit over worker safety and accountability.
This clash raises questions about the future of the hotel industry in NYC, the balance between worker rights and business interests, and the effectiveness of government regulation.
