Today marks the 23rd anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks that forever changed New York City and the nation. The annual 9/11 memorial ceremony at Ground Zero will be held at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris expected to attend.

The ceremony will begin at 8:46 a.m. with a moment of silence marking the moment hijacked Flight 11 struck the North Tower. Other moments of silence will follow, honoring the times of the other attacks. The ceremony is expected to conclude around 12:30 p.m.

9/11 Moments of Silence

The ceremony will include six moments of silence to mark the following events:

  • 8:46 a.m. - Flight 11 strikes the North Tower
  • 9:03 a.m. - Flight 175 strikes the South Tower
  • 9:37 a.m. - Flight 77 strikes the Pentagon
  • 9:59 a.m. - The South Tower collapses
  • 10:03 a.m. - Flight 93 crashes in Shanksville, Pennsylvania
  • 10:28 a.m. - The North Tower collapses

Street Closures

Due to the ceremony, several streets around the World Trade Center will be closed:

  • Areas bounded by Barclay Street on the North; Rector Street on the South; Broadway on the East; West Street on the West (All Inclusive)
  • Liberty Street between West Street and South End Avenue
  • Albany Street between West Street and South End Avenue
  • West Thames Street between West Street and South End Avenue
  • South End Avenue between Liberty Street and West Thames Street
  • Battery Place between West Thames Street and 3rd Place
  • 3rd Place between Battery Place and Little West Street
  • Little West Street between 3rd Place and Battery Place

Drivers should plan accordingly and expect delays, especially with the United Nations General Assembly also causing closures on Manhattan's East Side.
