NYC High School Basketball Coaches Furious Over Forfeited Games

Over 70 NYC high school basketball teams had to forfeit their first games this season due to a new, strict rule from the Public School Athletic League (PSAL). The rule, implemented to prevent cheating involving age and eligibility issues, required team rosters to be submitted by November 18th. Failure to meet this deadline resulted in automatic forfeits.

The Impact:

• 74 schools forfeited games. This is a significant number, impacting many young athletes and their teams.
• Coaches face financial penalties: Coaches could lose up to four hours of pay per forfeit, approximately $250.
• PSAL working on reinstatement: The league is working to reinstate the games for the affected 700 teams.

The strict new rule is a direct response to a major cheating scandal last year that even resulted in the cancellation of the league's championship game. While the intention is to ensure fair play, the stringent deadline and lack of leniency have left coaches and administrators frustrated, arguing that the penalty disproportionately punishes students and doesn't address the root causes of eligibility issues.

"Schools have a lot of moving pieces going on … an arbitrary deadline they [PSAL] decided on this year out of nowhere without any sort of leniency seems like it’s punishing the kids and not teaching anyone anything," said David Garcia-Rosen, dean/athletic director of Urban Assembly Bronx Academy of Letters.
