NYC Health Commissioner Resigns, Citing Family Reasons

The New York City Health Commissioner, Ashwin Vasan, has announced his resignation, effective Friday. Vasan, who previously committed to staying on until early next year, cited wanting to spend more time with his family as the reason for his departure.

Michelle Morse, the city's chief medical officer, will take over as interim health commissioner while the city searches for a permanent replacement.

This resignation comes amid a series of high-profile departures from Mayor Eric Adams' administration. Tom Donlon, the interim NYPD commissioner, is also expected to resign soon, and several other officials have left within the last few weeks.

A Series of Departures Raises Eyebrows

The timing of these resignations and departures has sparked speculation, particularly given the recent federal investigation into the Adams administration. While Vasan has not been tied to any ongoing investigations, the departures of Rana Abbasova and Winnie Greco, both of whom had their homes raided by federal authorities, have raised concerns about the administration's stability.

Abbasova, who served as a staffer in the Mayor’s Office of International Affairs, has been identified as a key witness in the illegal campaign donations case against Mayor Adams. She is reportedly cooperating with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. Greco, the mayor's Director of Asian Affairs, also tendered her resignation after her home was raided.

Sheena Wright, the deputy mayor, also officially resigned Tuesday morning, adding to the growing list of departures.

Questions Remain

With multiple high-profile officials stepping down and federal investigations ongoing, the future of Mayor Adams' administration remains uncertain. The public is left wondering if these departures are simply due to personal reasons or if they are indicative of a larger problem within the administration.
