NYC Health Commissioner Resigns Amidst Administration Shakeup: Is It The Federal Probe?
NYC Health Commissioner Resigns Amidst Administration Shakeup
New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan has submitted his resignation, marking the third high-profile departure from Mayor Eric Adams' administration in recent weeks. Vasan, who has served since the beginning of Adams' term, cited personal and family reasons for his resignation, unrelated to ongoing federal investigations into the mayor and his officials.
Vasan is expected to stay on until early January, giving the city time to transition to a new commissioner. In his statement, Adams praised Vasan's accomplishments, highlighting the implementation of programs to address medical debt, teen mental health, and life expectancy in the city.
A String of Resignations
Vasan's resignation follows the recent departures of Mayor Adams' chief counsel, Lisa Zornberg, and NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban. Zornberg abruptly quit last week, citing the federal probe as a hindrance to her ability to perform her job effectively. Caban resigned after federal agents raided his home, claiming the investigation was a distraction to running the city's largest police force.
Interim Police Commissioner Also Raided
Mayor Adams is still searching for a permanent police commissioner, having appointed Tom Donlon as the interim head of the NYPD. However, Donlon's home was also raided by federal agents shortly after his appointment. The investigation into Donlon, who has held the position for over 20 years, reportedly focused on documents in his possession.
Donlon claims the materials seized were unrelated to his work with the NYPD and are over 20 years old. Mayor Adams is taking his time to select a permanent commissioner, emphasizing the importance of a strong rapport with the person leading the police department, especially with public safety being a top concern for New Yorkers.
