NYC Getting a New Area Code! What's the 3-Digit Prefix?

NYC's New Area Code: More Numbers Needed

New York City is running out of phone numbers! To address this, a new area code has been approved for the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and uptown Manhattan's Marble Hill. These areas currently use 347, 718, 917, and 929 area codes.

Why the new area code? According to Rory M. Christian, chair of the state’s Public Service Commission, the new code is needed due to economic growth and increased activity in the NYC metro area. The new area code overlay will support future demand for telecommunication services.

What's the new area code? The mystery remains! The North American Numbering Plan Administrator will announce the three-digit prefix in the coming months. Existing numbers will remain unchanged.

The last time NYC got a new area code was in 2011 (929). This addition will prevent future number exhaustion, although some minor inconveniences may result.
