NYC Getting a New Area Code: What You Need to Know

NYC's Getting a Brand New Area Code!

Big news for New Yorkers: The Big Apple is getting a new area code! The New York State Public Service Commission has approved an overlay for the five boroughs, meaning existing numbers will remain the same. However, all new numbers will be assigned the new area code once the current 347, 718, 917, and 929 codes are fully allocated.

The new three-digit area code will be revealed in the coming months. This addition is necessary due to the booming economy and increased demand for phone numbers fueled by the rise of cell phones and tablets.

Who's Affected?

This new area code will cover all of the following areas:

  • Bronx
  • Brooklyn
  • Queens
  • Staten Island
  • Marble Hill (Manhattan)

This overlay method is now standard practice for expanding phone number capacity, as seen recently in parts of Long Island which adopted the 363 area code.
