The banana was part of Maurizio Cattelan's piece, "Comedian." Alam, who works for $12 an hour, was devastated to learn about the sale, stating, "I am a poor man."
The $6.2 Million Banana
The artwork, which first appeared at Art Basel in 2019, sold for $6.2 million (including fees) at Sotheby's. The buyer, Chinese cryptocurrency founder Justin Sun, plans to buy 100,000 bananas from Alam and distribute them worldwide.

A New Yorker has started a GoFundMe for Alam, promising to match the first $5000 raised. The campaign quickly exceeded its initial goal.
The Artist's Perspective
Artist Cattelan, while sympathetic to Alam's situation, stated that art doesn't solve problems. Sun, however, is taking action by providing Alam with the means for a more comfortable life, further highlighting the duality of art's impact and interpretation.
