Cold Weather Advisories are in effect across the region.
What is a Polar Vortex?
A polar vortex is a large area of low pressure and frigid air near the North Pole. While typically confined to the Arctic, disruptions can send freezing air south, resulting in extreme cold, high winds, and wintry conditions in the United States. The last major polar vortex event impacting NYC was in January 2019.
How Cold Will It Get?
Temperatures are expected to remain frigid for the rest of the week, with:
- Wednesday: High near 21°F
- Thursday: High near 30°F
- Friday: High near 31°F
- Saturday: High near 31°F
- Sunday: High near 38°F
The NOAA NWS Weather Prediction Center predicts sub-zero wind chills through Friday. A slow return to normal temperatures is expected by the weekend.
Stay Safe During the Cold Snap
The NOAA recommends:
- Protecting pets and livestock.
- Avoiding prolonged outdoor exposure during the coldest hours.
- Preparing a cold weather survival kit for travel and ensuring vehicles are fully fueled.
Next week should bring some relief, with temperatures forecast in the high 30s by Monday and Tuesday.
