NYC Frozen! 100+ Flights Canceled Amidst Arctic Blast & Unexpected Snow

NYC's Unexpected Blizzard: Flights Grounded, City Freezes

An arctic blast has hit NYC, bringing with it a deep freeze and a surprise snowfall exceeding anything seen in three years. This unexpected winter storm led to significant travel disruptions across the city and beyond.

Airport Chaos

LaGuardia Airport experienced over 100 flight cancellations, making it one of the worst-affected airports in the nation. Newark Liberty International Airport faced similar issues. While JFK Airport saw fewer cancellations (60 outbound, 70 inbound), hundreds of flights were delayed.

Snow Accumulation and Temperature Plunge

The National Weather Service predicted 3-5 inches of snow across the five boroughs, with some areas potentially receiving up to 6 inches. Coastal areas of Connecticut and Long Island were also affected. The snow, initially mixed with hail, turned to steady snowfall overnight, ceasing around 1 a.m. Monday.

Temperatures plummeted into the teens overnight, with wind chills dropping as low as 9 degrees by 7 a.m. Monday.

City Officials' Response

NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol urged New Yorkers to take the storm seriously and prepare for hazardous travel conditions, advising the use of mass transit if travel is necessary.

Broader Impact

The arctic air mass impacted a vast area, extending as far south as Louisiana and Mississippi, due to a polar vortex disruption. Amtrak canceled several routes due to the extreme cold.

The last time NYC saw this much snow in Central Park was January 2022. This recent storm marks a significant change from the minimal snowfall in recent years.
