The city's food insecurity crisis is hitting record highs, with over 1 million more visits to pantries and soup kitchens each month compared to 2019. This surpasses even the peak demand seen during the pandemic in 2020-2021.
Soaring Cost of Living Fuels the Crisis
City Harvest points to the skyrocketing cost of living as a major contributing factor to the increase. With food, child care, and housing costs remaining elevated, many New Yorkers are struggling to afford basic necessities, including nutritious food for their families. Jilly Stephens, CEO of City Harvest, emphasizes the need for action, stating, "These costs make it harder for New Yorkers to afford the fresh, nutritious food their families need to thrive. It is essential that we all step up to help provide free, high-quality food to the millions of New Yorkers who are experiencing food insecurity."
Helping Hands and Hunger Action Month
City Harvest is committed to addressing the crisis by rescuing and delivering over 81 million pounds of food each year to food pantries and soup kitchens across the city. They are also launching the City Harvest Produce Pals program this fall, providing free fresh fruits and vegetables to students and their families at select schools.
September is Hunger Action Month, and various organizations are stepping up to fight food insecurity. Inday restaurant in Williamsburg will donate $1 to City Harvest for every Karma Bowl sold, and the Lasting Change app will feature City Harvest as a highlighted charity.
The Depth of the Crisis: NYC's Poverty Rate
The severity of the food insecurity crisis is reflected in New York City's poverty rate, which is nearly twice the national average. In 2022, the city's poverty rate stood at 23%, compared to 12% nationally. As of April 2024, there were 511 emergency food provider locations in the city, including food pantries and soup kitchens. The Bronx has the highest poverty rate in the city at 28%, followed by Brooklyn at 17.2%.
