Voting Machine Problems in Queens on Election Day
Reports of malfunctioning ballot scanners at several polling sites in Queens surfaced on Election Day. Some voters experienced delays and frustration as machines struggled to process ballots, requiring multiple attempts to scan.
The New York City Board of Elections acknowledged issues but assured the public that "corrective measures were undertaken" and all ballots will be counted.
Long Lines and Frustration for Voters
Voters at PS2Q The Alfred Zimberg School in East Elmhurst, PS184 in Whitestone, and JHS 190 Russell Sage in Forest Hills, Queens, reported long lines and lengthy waits. Some voters were forced to wait for hours to cast their ballots, with only one machine working at times at JHS 190.
Language Barriers and Lack of Preparation
Several voters also complained about a lack of Spanish-speaking poll workers at PS184 in Whitestone. One voter left with her ballot after encountering difficulties communicating with poll workers. The BOE, after being contacted by CBS News, increased the number of translators at the site to three.
Concerns about Election Day Organization
Some voters voiced concerns about the organization and preparation at polling sites. Long lines, delayed scanning processes, and limited resources contributed to frustration. The warm temperatures outside also exacerbated the situation for many voters.
Beyond Queens: Long Lines in Other Boroughs
Long lines were also reported at polling locations in other boroughs, including Ditmas Park, Brooklyn, where a ballot scanner issue added to wait times.
