Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul announced a major success in their crackdown on illegal vehicles in NYC. A joint effort between the NYPD, DSNY, and MTA has resulted in the removal of over 7,500 ghost cars and 27,000 illegal motorized vehicles from city streets in just one year!

This massive undertaking, which intensified after the launch of a joint NYPD and DSNY task force in September, targets vehicles with obscured or altered license plates – known as 'ghost cars' – as well as illegal motorized scooters, bikes, and ATVs.

Why the crackdown? These vehicles pose significant public safety risks and are increasingly involved in violent crimes. Furthermore, 'ghost plates' lead to millions in lost revenue for the state each year due to toll evasion.

"Ghost cars contribute to the feeling of disorder," stated Adams, highlighting the impact on city life. Hochul emphasized the financial toll and the strengthened enforcement actions taken by the city-state task force.

This announcement was part of Adams' Public Safety Week, showcasing the administration's community-focused safety initiatives.
