Staten Island's Joe Borelli Resigns from NYC Council

Council Minority Leader Joe Borelli.

Joe Borelli, the Minority Leader of the NYC Council representing Staten Island's 51st District, has announced his resignation, effective end of January 2025. This comes before his term limit in November. He'll be pursuing opportunities in the private sector.

Borelli, a prominent Republican voice in the largely Democratic city, made the announcement via X (formerly Twitter): "Some personal news…I am excited for the next chapter in my life. Thank you all for your support and (mostly) kindness over the years."

His tenure included outspoken stances on various issues, notably his recent opposition (alongside other Staten Island officials) to a proposed cannabis dispensary in Great Kills.

He also strongly condemned the assassination attempt on President Trump, emphasizing the importance of peaceful political change through voting, not violence. On a more positive note, he secured $1 million in funding for improvements to the Huguenot Park Library.

A special election will be held to fill Borelli's seat for the remainder of 2025. The date is yet to be determined.

This resignation leaves a significant void in NYC politics, especially considering ongoing challenges in housing, the economy, transportation, and crime.
