NYC Councilman Demands Firings After Early Release of Violent Criminal Leads to Triple Slaying

Rep. Ritchie Torres, a Bronx Democrat, is demanding the firing of officials after a mentally ill, eight-time convicted criminal, Ramon Rivera, was released early from custody and subsequently committed a triple homicide. Torres criticizes what he calls "layers upon layers of government failure" for enabling the tragedy.

Torres's Outrage:

In a letter to Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams, Torres explicitly called for the dismissal of the Department of Correction (DOC) official who authorized Rivera's early release. He stated that those who cannot ensure public safety should not be employed by the city.

Rivera's history included a recent assault on a correction officer while in Bellevue Hospital's psych ward, yet he received an early release for 'good behavior'. This early release, in Torres's opinion, is a major contributor to the subsequent homicides.

Criticism of Hochul and Adams:

Torres has also criticized Governor Hochul, referring to her as "the new Joe Biden", and Mayor Eric Adams, blaming them for failing to prevent such events. Adams himself has called on Albany for greater police authority to address issues of homelessness and mental illness.

The Stabbings:

Rivera, a 51-year-old homeless man, was arrested for fatally stabbing three individuals in separate incidents. These incidents are part of a larger problem of violent crime and homelessness plaguing New York City. The attacks also coincide with the ongoing trial of Daniel Penny, charged in connection with the death of Jordan Neely.

Consequences and Preventability:

Torres emphasizes the lack of consequences for criminals in the city and state, stating that only the victims and their families suffer. He argues that these tragedies are preventable but that the lack of political will prevents the implementation of necessary solutions, citing the failure to grant the mayor the authority to address dangerous individuals on the streets and the DOC's failure to hold Rivera accountable.
