NYC Council Member Justin Brannan Eyes Comptroller Race: Can He Be the City's 'Fiscal Pitbull'?

Justin Brannan Jumps Into NYC Comptroller Race

New York City Council Member Justin Brannan is considering a run for Comptroller in 2025, adding his name to a growing list of Democrats vying for the position. Brannan, who represents southern Brooklyn, has chaired the City Council's Finance Committee for the past three years, giving him a deep understanding of the city's budget.

Brannan sees the Comptroller's office as a logical next step to continue his work in the council. He argues that the city has the resources to fully fund CUNY, implement universal child care, and give EMS workers pay parity. He also highlights the challenges nonprofits face in getting paid for services they provide to the city.

As chair of the Finance Committee, Brannan has clashed with Mayor Eric Adams' administration over budget issues and what the council believes are misleading economic forecasts. This experience will likely be a key talking point in Brannan's campaign, where he plans to position himself as an independent watchdog to ensure taxpayers' dollars are spent wisely.

If Brannan runs, he'll face stiff competition from other Democratic candidates, including Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine and Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar. Brannan is known for running close races, but never at the citywide level.

Brannan, who previously worked for former Council Member Vincent Gentile, says his journey to politics has been winding but ultimately driven by a desire to serve constituents. He sees the Comptroller's role as vital in ensuring the city budget delivers tangible results for New Yorkers.

Brannan is currently exploring a run and fundraising for a potential campaign. His campaign song? "C.R.E.A.M." by the Wu-Tang Clan, a fitting choice considering he's starting fundraising from scratch.
