NYC Council Approves Bill to Greenery Up City Medians: Will It Actually Happen?

Bronx Gets Greener: Council Bill Aims to Greenify Medians

The New York City Council has passed a bill that could bring much-needed greenery to the city's often-bare medians. Starting in 2026, the city will be required to add plants and greenery to at least one linear mile of paved medians every two years until 2046.

The bill, sponsored by Councilman Oswald Feliz (D-Bronx), aims to address a significant disparity in access to green spaces, particularly in disadvantaged communities. "Historically, disadvantaged communities have had the least access to green and healthy spaces," Feliz said. "Natural spaces are important to our mental health and physical well-being, and this legislation will help ensure every community has access to these green spaces."

Benefits of Greener Medians:

  • Clean Air: Plants and trees help absorb pollutants, improving air quality.
  • Noise Reduction: Green spaces act as natural sound barriers, mitigating noise pollution.
  • Improved Mental Health: Access to nature has been linked to improved mental well-being.
  • Environmental Resilience: Greenery can help prepare communities for extreme weather events.
