Ritchie Torres: From Congressman to Governor?

Bronx Representative Ritchie Torres is considering a run for New York governor in 2026, adding fuel to the already heated political climate. This comes after a series of pointed criticisms against Governor Kathy Hochul, whom Torres has described as ineffective and compared to Joe Biden.

Torres's decision will depend on a "listening tour" across the state, with a final decision expected by mid-2025. Intriguingly, he hasn't ruled out a mayoral run either. He blames both state and city governance failures for Donald Trump's surprising gains in New York during the 2024 election.

Hochul's Response

Hochul's campaign team reportedly fears Torres's potential candidacy, recognizing his appeal to moderate Democrats. Hochul's press secretary deflected blame for the release of alleged serial stabber Ramon Rivera, who killed three people after his early release, to the city's justice system.

A 'Formidable' Challenger?

Political consultants believe Torres would be a strong candidate, highlighting his strategic thinking and dedication. He's been critical of both Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams' handling of public safety issues and the release of Rivera, leading to a back-and-forth exchange between Torres and Adams.

This developing story promises a fascinating showdown, with far-reaching implications for New York's political landscape.
