NYC Officials Arrested During ICE Facility Protest
Eleven Democratic elected officials, including NYC Comptroller Brad Lander and Public Advocate Jumaane D. Williams, were arrested on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at 26 Federal Plaza in Lower Manhattan.
The officials attempted to access ICE detention cells on the 10th floor, which have faced scrutiny due to alleged unsanitary and overcrowded conditions. A federal judge recently ordered ICE to improve conditions.
After being denied access and refusing to leave following a one-hour standoff, the officials were arrested around 3:45 p.m. They unfurled a banner reading, “NYers against ICE” before their arrest.
This action highlights ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of migrants in ICE detention.
This incident follows previous complaints about the conditions within the facility and a court order mandating improvements.
The arrests sparked immediate reactions and renewed the debate surrounding immigration policies and the conditions within ICE detention centers.
