NYC Casino Dreams Crumble: Manhattan Bid Rejected, What's Next for Downstate Gambling?
Manhattan's hopes for a new casino have been dashed. A state board rejected the Soloviev Group-Mohegan Sun's "Freedom Plaza" casino proposal in Midtown East due to significant neighborhood opposition. Only representatives from Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams supported the plan.

A Coney Island casino bid is also facing strong opposition. Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, state Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, and Councilman Justin Brannan have publicly voiced their opposition, stating the project has "failed to prove itself as a public good."

These will soon face local votes.

All local siting board votes must be completed by September 30th, with the state Gaming Commission aiming for a final decision by the year's end.
The future of downstate casino development remains uncertain, heavily reliant on overcoming community concerns and navigating the complex regulatory process.
