New York City has canceled all fireworks permits for its New Year's Eve celebrations due to a historic drought and an unprecedented number of brush fires. This means the traditional fireworks displays over Central Park and Prospect Park are on hold until 2025.

NYC Parks Commissioner Donoghue stated that the decision was made to prioritize public safety, given the recent surge in brush fires. The FDNY responded to over 270 brush fires in a two-week period in November—the highest two-week response in the city's history.

While the fireworks are canceled, the New York Road Runners' midnight run in Central Park will proceed as scheduled. The city is exploring alternative celebratory options, including a drone light show in Prospect Park.
