Due to the ongoing drought and recent park fires, New York City has announced the cancellation of the popular New Year's Eve fireworks displays planned over Central Park and Prospect Park.

Central Park's fireworks, usually coordinated by the New York Road Runners, are officially off. However, they are exploring alternative festive options for the NYRR Midnight Run.

Prospect Park will instead feature a spectacular light show using illuminated drones, creating iconic images of landmarks such as the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty.

This decision follows the city's suspension of fireworks permits issued last month, as a preventative measure against further fire risks.

The New York Road Runners released a statement saying, "Due to the drought and recent park fires, our City partners have asked us to not host our annual fireworks. To ring in the new year during New York Road Runners' NYRR Midnight Run, we are exploring other festive options."

This unexpected change promises a unique and possibly more environmentally conscious New Year's Eve celebration in the city.
