NYC Cafe Serves Viral Olympic Village Muffins: A TikTok Dream Come True

Remember those decadent chocolate muffins that went viral during the Paris Olympics? The ones that had swimmers like Henrik Christiansen, aka the "muffin man," singing their praises? Well, a New Yorker named Kelin Carolyn Zhang wasn't content with just a recipe. She wanted the real deal.

Zhang's quest to bring the Olympic Village muffins to NYC became a social media sensation in itself, documented on her TikTok account. Her perseverance led her to Isshiki Matcha, an East Village cafe, where she partnered with owner Angel Zheng to make the dream a reality.

The muffins, supplied by Coup de Pates, a Parisian bakery specializing in wholesale orders, arrived in New York via airfreight, requiring FDA approval and customs clearance. The first pop-up event at Isshiki Matcha drew lines around the block, with the limited-edition muffins selling out in just two hours.

The hype is real, and the muffins are even better than the hype. As Zheng puts it, "I don't think it's about making chocolate muffins. It's about the magic of these muffins that no one could get their hands on besides Olympic athletes."

The second pop-up event, with a whopping 1,000 muffins, is underway now, coinciding with the Paralympics. While the initial event was a resounding success, Zhang anticipates a smaller turnout this time, given the late notice and the holiday weekend.

This story is a testament to the power of the internet and the passion of individuals who dare to dream big. It's a reminder that anything is possible, even bringing Olympic Village treats to the streets of New York City.
