NYC Building Superintendent Accused of Stealing $350,000 from 100-Year-Old Resident

A New York City building superintendent, previously lauded in a New York Times profile as a devoted caregiver, has been charged with stealing over $350,000 from a 100-year-old resident. Rosalind Hernandez, 56, allegedly persuaded the victim to grant her power of attorney, subsequently using his finances for unauthorized purchases.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg stated, “The victim relied on Ms. Hernandez for help, yet after she befriended him, she allegedly broke his trust and stole his hard-earned money for her personal greed.” Hernandez's attorney, Vik Pawar, declared their intent to fight the charges.

The New York Times article described Hernandez as a caregiver to many elderly residents in the 53-unit co-op building. One resident, Antonio Ruas, was quoted as saying, “If it weren’t for her, I’d be in the gutter.” While the DA's office hasn't confirmed if Ruas is the victim, the details strongly suggest a match.

According to the indictment, Hernandez allegedly used the victim's funds for personal expenses, including travel, clothing, and an entrepreneurship training program. After a fall and subsequent recovery, the victim discovered the theft upon regaining access to his accounts.

Hernandez faces two counts of grand larceny and has been released with an order of protection.
