NYC Brace for More Rain and Potential Flooding This Weekend: Tropical Storm Debby Impact
The tri-state area is bracing for another round of heavy rain this weekend as the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby move north. After a deluge on Tuesday, which saw some areas receive 2-4 inches of rain, Friday will see more precipitation.
While Wednesday and Thursday will be damp and dreary with scattered showers, the flood threat will be low. However, with the ground already saturated from Tuesday’s rain, even a small amount of rain could cause minor flooding.
The worst of the rainfall and storms is now expected to pass west of the NYC metro area, with the greatest flood threat shifting into the Mid-Hudson Valley, Catskills and Poconos.
Flood and Wind Concerns
Rainfall rates up to 1-2 inches are possible, making flooding a chief concern. Areas closer to coastal areas can expect 1-3 inches of rain, while areas farther inland could see 3-4 inch totals. This is in addition to the 2-5 inches of rain that fell on Tuesday.
In addition to heavy rainfall, Friday also comes with a marginal risk for severe weather, with damaging winds being the main concern. Gusts could exceed 50mph, strong enough to blow limbs off trees and knock down power lines.
Showers and storms will continue to track through the area until they finally move offshore early Saturday morning. When that happens, humidity will drop significantly and sunshine will increase throughout the day, leaving us with a beautiful weekend overall.
