NYC Airport Shutdown: Drone Activity Grounds Stewart Airfield
Drone activity caused a one-hour shutdown of runways at Stewart Airfield in New Windsor, NY, on Friday night. Governor Kathy Hochul expressed frustration, stating that the situation has "gone too far." This incident adds to the growing concern over numerous drone sightings across the Tri-State area, including New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
Growing Frustration and Federal Response
Lawmakers are demanding answers from the federal government regarding the drones' origins and purpose. While White House officials have deemed the threats as "not credible," local officials, like Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella, express deep concern and demand answers.
Governor Hochul is calling on Congress to pass the Counter-UAS Authority Security, Safety, and Reauthorization Act, which would strengthen the FAA's oversight of drones and extend counter-UAS activities to state and local law enforcement agencies. She also urges the Biden Administration to deploy additional federal law enforcement to the region until this legislation passes.
New Jersey Representative Chris Smith will also unveil new federal legislation to address the issue, following a similar request from Governor Phil Murphy to President Biden for increased federal support.
Drone sightings have also been reported in Pennsylvania and other East Coast cities, highlighting the widespread nature of this concerning issue.
