NYC 2025 Begins with Tragedy: Two Murders Shock Harlem and the Bronx

NYC 2025 Starts with Tragedy: Double Homicide Rocks Harlem and Bronx
The new year in New York City began tragically with two homicides in Harlem and the Bronx, marking the city's first murders of 2025.
Harlem Homicide: A Slashed Throat
Around 4:20 a.m., a man was fatally slashed in the neck outside a deli on West 137th Street and Lenox Avenue in Harlem. The victim was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. A suspect later turned themselves in to the police; the motive remains unclear.
Bronx Shooting: Gunfire Claims Another Life
Approximately an hour later, a shooting occurred in the Claremont section of the Bronx on East 170th Street and Teller Avenue. 46-year-old Mario Fowler was found with gunshot wounds and later died at St. Barnabas Hospital. Another 23-year-old man sustained a graze wound to his chin and is recovering.
Citizen App video captured the scene, showing the chaotic aftermath. Witnesses described the shooter as wearing all black clothing and a ski mask.
2024 Crime Statistics
While the start of 2025 is marred by these events, it's important to note that 2024 saw a decrease in crime. The NYPD reported a 4% decrease in murders (376 killings), an 8% decrease in shootings, and a 5% decrease in shooting victims compared to 2023.
