NYC 2025 Starts with Tragedy: Double Homicide Rocks Harlem and Bronx
New York City's start to 2025 was marred by two back-to-back killings within hours of the New Year's celebrations. The first incident occurred in Harlem around 4:20 a.m. on Wednesday. A man was found with a slash wound to his neck on W. 137th St. and Lenox Ave. Despite immediate medical attention at Harlem Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. Police have a person of interest in custody but haven't filed charges yet.
Less than an hour later, another tragedy unfolded in the Bronx. A 46-year-old man, Mario Fowler, was fatally shot on E. 170th St. near Teller Ave. A 23-year-old man was also found with a graze wound to the chin nearby. While police found a trail of blood near the building steps where Fowler was discovered, no arrests have been made in connection with this second incident. Neighbors described Fowler as a "respectful" family man.
<br>The Aftermath:
This double homicide stands in stark contrast to the NYPD's reported 3% drop in homicides and 7% drop in shootings in 2024. The city ended 2024 with 375 homicides and 899 shootings, marking a decrease compared to the previous year. However, these recent events highlight the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining the city's safety.
